During the pandemic, Kansans have found solace in nature. To celebrate Kansas poetry and the beauty of the spring bird migration, the Schlagle Library has been selected by Humanities Kansas to offer free copies of its original poetry and bird chapbook, Words of a Feather during the month of July. The chapbook features 10 poems inspired by Kansas birds paired with original bird illustrations by Brad Sneed, followed by questions to engage readers in humanities-themed conversations. Copies are limited to adults only.  One per person please.

When you come to the library, feel free to check out a pair of our library binoculars (with a library card or valid ID) to watch birds off the deck or on the lake.  We can also provide you a list of Kansas birds for birdwatching at the lake or at home.

In addition, for every bird-related book you check out in the month of July from any KCKPL branch, you will receive an entry into a drawing for a brand new bird feeder and bag of birdseed.  There is no limit to how many times you can enter.  We will draw a winner on August 2.

(Words of a Feather is made possible by the Humanities Kansas Friends of the Humanities, the Elizabeth Schultz Environmental Fund of the Douglas County Community Foundation, the Kansas Tourism, and Kansas State Parks.)
